Summary: Only one phylogenetic study addressed the relationships of Conura. The proposed classification presented three subgenera, with subgenus Conura being one of them. Composed of 10 species groups and 58 available species this subgenus is poorly delimited, the methods used to recover it and its internal relationships are questionable. In the present study, 122 morphological characters for a total of 71 species of subgenus Conura, and 24 species as outgroup were scored. All species groups of Conura subgenus were represented. Phylogenetic search analysis used TNT. Six tree topologies were found, none of them recovered Conura subgenus as a natural group. The maculata species group was always paraphyletic, the remaining groups were almost always monophyletic. Results suggests a close relationship between bouceki + philippia + toluca, and incongrua + oiketicusi + nigricornis, and maculata + steffani + dares + vau. Based on this results, the classification of the subgenus and its groups of species are discussed, the reclassification proposals are considered. The articulation of head capsule and mesosoma, the mandibles, and the epicnemial and transverse carinae of mesopleuron were briefly discussed.
